Beside Lights – Afraid To Fall (Official Music Video)

Beside Lights - Afraid To Fall (Official Music Video)

Discovering new music is such an exciting thing. Finding a band or artist that just blows you away and makes a connection with you that you’ve never heard of before. It’s even more exciting when you find them before they make it big and on the radio.

Beside Lights is a band from Australia that formed in 2011. And it’s very clear that these guys could make it big. Fronted by Adrian Wilson on vocals and guitar, Brad Vellacott on bass, Terence H’ng on keyboard, and Jarryd Price on drums. The chemistry between all of the members is incredible. That becomes very clear when you watch any of their live performances. It’s amazing how well the band works, and just how good their songs on, for only having formed just last year.

Afraid To Fall is about being afraid to fail, and jumping back into a relationship. Yet this is just one of many songs the band has that could be big hits. Beside Lights is currently competing in Australia’s Got Talent, where for their audition they played a song called Oceans. Watching them on AGT they look like pros that have been playing together for a long time. Both songs I think could be on the radio today.

Regardless of whether or not they make it to the finale of AGT, they have a bright future ahead. It’s hard to imagine that Beside Lights wouldn’t keep moving ahead to greater opportunities from here.

You can check out more of Beside Lights on YouTube, including a really good cover of Christina Perri’s song A Thousand Years from front man Adrian Wilson. Also their debut EP which includes Afraid To Fall is available on iTunes.

Usher – Scream Cover by Melanie Wehbe

Usher - Scream (Cover Melanie Wehbe)

Last week I put together a 10 Best of list for Maroon 5′s new song Payphone. One of the artist I found while putting together that list is the awesome Melanie Wehbe. Her cover of Payphone is pretty good. And the more I listened to her covers on YouTube, the more I really dig her voice.

She started singing with her grandmother at a very young age, and throughout the years, her passion has only become stronger. Melanie has her whole country of Sweden taking notice of her talent. Having made it to the top 30 Swedish version of American Idol, winning the nationwide TV show “Vakna med The Voice,” and eventually getting signed to a record label.

Melanie’s cover of Usher’s song Scream is even better than her previous covers. I think it’s pretty clear that Melanie just has that natural gift of performing, and being a great singer. Her take on Scream is really interesting from the original. It works well for her though. I dare say that it’s better than the original. I really love the way she chooses to sing it.

Check out more of Melanie’s covers on her YouTube channel.

10 Best Covers: Maroon 5 – Payphone

1. Tyler War / Katy MacAllister

Could there such as thing as a bad cover from Tyler Ward? Probably Not. His voice is excellent as always. On his cover of Payphone he has Katy MacAllister singing with him. Katy’s voice compliments Tyler’s very well on the track. And she certainly has talent all her own.

2. Freak Morice

Kahlia just has one of those voices where she can cover any song, yes any song, and it sounds totally unique. When you listen to several covers of a song, there’s just no mistaken her voice amongst the others. Kahlia sounds completely sincere, as though the song was written by her.

3. Justin Tyler

Justin just kills it with his cover of Payphone. He does a decent job with the rap part of the song too.

4. Alex G / Jameson Bass

Not only does Alex G sound great on her cover, but has a really great video to go a long with it. Her voice is very smooth and controlled. I really love the video of Alex and James on a rooftop, and just the overall style.

5. Paradise Fears

Paradise Fears does a really acoustic version.

6. Andrew Garcia / D-Trix

Some of you might remember a guy by the named of Andrew Garcia that was on season 9 of American Idol. Payphone is a very fitting song for Andrew’s voice and style. It fits him like a glove. D-Trix’s rap is probably the best out of all 10 covers.

7. Jason Chen

Jason sounds fabulous with his version of Payphone.

8. Edo

Edo has one of the best covers in my opinion. His voice simply shines and is amazing. I really love the way he sings Payphone. It’s a little different than everyone else, definitely has conviction, and his guitar playing is really good.

9. Paulina

Just like Edo, Paulina does something with Payphone that’s quite different than the others. The tone of her voice is very sweet and innocent.

10. Melanie Wehbe

What I really love about Melanie’s version is simply her voice. You feel the passion with every single word she sings. She has amazing raw natural talent.

Carly Rae Jepsen – Call Me Maybe Cover by Alex Goot, Dave Days, & Chad Sugg

"Call Me Maybe" - Carly Rae Jepsen (Alex Goot, Dave Days, Chad Sugg COVER)

A few weeks ago I featured Alex G and Eppic covering Carly Rae Jepson’s catchy tune Call Me Maybe. It is still my favorite cover, but Alex Goot, Dave Days, and Chad Sugg, have released a cover of Call Me Maybe that is very well done. Their version goes in quite a different direction than the original and Alex G’s with a more rock edge, which I love and makes it just as unique.

These guys are incredibly great singers. Obviously they couldn’t take the same approach as others since the song is meant to be sung by a woman. Sure it’s a little weird, three guys singing Call Me Maybe. But the way they go about creating a video to go with the song is cool. Alex and Chad are both on a couch watching Dave on TV, wanting to be just like him. Then boom, Dave pops out of the TV and is in their living room rocking out. It’s a really easy listening to more than once. That’s a good sign you’ve create a really great cover.

John Legend – Ordinary People Cover by Jaz Ellington

Jaz Ellington Ordinary People The Voice UK

Reality TV talent shows are a really exciting way to discover new artists. Seeing artists plucked from their lives before making it big, and growing as an artist week after week is incredible. I honestly don’t think there is such as thing has too many reality TV singing competitions. To realize that despite all of these competitions, the internet, and YouTube, there are still so many undiscovered great artists out there. There are just so many incredible singers out there that never get any level of fame. Everybody loves it when you’re watching one of these reality TV competitions to hear someone that just blows you away, and you think how is this person not already a huge star.

About a month ago The Voice UK began their first season (series if you are British). Just like here in the US, you have 4 judges that choose artists during blind auditions. The Voice UK judges comprise of Will.i.am, Tom Jones, Jessie J, and The Script’s Danny O’Donoghue. Saturday night was the last night of the blind auditions, and they quite possibly saved the best for last.

On stage comes Jaz Ellington, a school music teacher with a love of gospel. It’s pretty apparent right off the bat, Jaz is a star. His voice is absolutely amazing. How is this guy not already a big star? I’m sure all 4 of the judges would have turned out if 3 hadn’t already acquired to max of 10 singers. Which worked out really well for Will.i.am. Jaz was so good, Jessie J asked him to sing another song. He obliged with John Legend’s Ordinary people, which Will.i.am helped write, and is one of Jessie J’s favorites. You can see in the video just how emotional they both get when Jaz sings Ordinary People. And it was just as good as the original, if not better.

Personally I would go as far as to say this guy is up there with Stevie Wonder in terms of shear talent.
